On Tuesday, March 27th, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter stood on the Capitol steps with Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski, Lancaster Mayor Richard Gray, and Chester Mayor John Linder to voice opposition to House Bill 1523. This Representative Daryl Metcalfe (R) sponsored bill seeks to penalize municipalities which have enacted local gun reporting legislation. Mayor Nutter defends laws that require gun owners to report lost or stolen weapons arguing such regulations help curb illegal gun sales. He states, "The Commonwealth takes this kind of action to further restrict us in our ability to protect our citizens." If passed, HB 1523 will give the National Rifle Association (NRA) the same rights as an individual to challenge local gun ordinances. Saying he was sued by the NRA, Nutter declares, "It's one of the proudest moments of my nearly 20 years in public service." --Tara Leo Auchey
