As released by the Office of the Dauphin County District Attorney:

Dauphin County District Attorney Ed Marsico today announced the District Attorney’s Office is providing $25,000 to the City of Harrisburg for street light replacement and repair. This initiative is part of the District Attorney’s Office’s 2014 crime prevention projects.

“Dark streets invite criminal behavior, and make for unsafe driving and walking conditions,” Marsico noted. “Fixing broken street lights is a first step in preventing crime and brightening the image of Harrisburg,” Marsico said.

The monies for the project came from the Dauphin County Violent Crimes Task Force and are funded by revenues from table games at the Hollywood Casino in East Hanover Township. Monies from that fund have previously been used for saturation police details and surveillance cameras in the city.

District Attorney Marsico credited Commissioner George Hartwick, III, with the idea of using these funds to replace streetlights. “Commissioner Hartwick knows that city residents want to see their lights fixed and needed funding to accomplish that goal,” Marsico said.

Marsico noted that he looked forward to working with Mayor Eric Papenfuse and Harrisburg Police Chief Tom Carter on this and other crime prevention projects.
